Terrier Interaction

If you own a terrier, you’ll realize that his idea of fun is tugging and digging games since these types of activities help make his life worthwhile. His thought process doesn't need the thrill of the chase as much as the thrill of the kill. Regardless of how much you may not like his instinctive need to search, dig out, and eliminate the nearby small mammal population, by putting it under your control as well as offering him or her far more socially acceptable outlets for his hard-wired behaviours, you can stop him going self-employed and getting his kicks for real. More often than not this means making them their own digging pit and hiding toys and treats in it so he or she gets to seek out things. There are various rope dog toys that you can buy, some for throwing and tugging and others for chewing. Taking out interesting tug toys, such as Kong dog toys, on walks and taking part in those stalking, hunting, tugging games that make terriers’ eyes illuminate with joy can make their life so satisfying. Some people will tell you not to play tugging games with dogs such as terriers that are predatory but this is denying your dog their character. It is important nevertheless that you teach your dog a trusted and firm ‘leave’ since by doing this not only are you keeping in control of your tugging games (which helps you bond even more) but you are also showing him or her self-control. Tugging toys are also great for distracting your dog from anything he may otherwise be reactive to (such as other dogs, squirrels, cyclists and joggers) since what you are doing will help keep his concentration and is considerably more interesting to him. An active dog is a happy dog so it is very important to share as much of your time as you can with them by stimulating their minds by playing games and giving them lots of walks.

Garden Wildlife in Winter

As we sit comfortably indoors this winter, it’s well worth sparing a thought for our garden birds. Extreme winters, as recently experienced in the UK, can be quite a real test of survival abilities for many of our more common bird types such as blackbirds, tits, robins and sparrows. On a single frosty winters night, birds may use up an amazing 10% of their total bodyweight just trying to keep warm. Because of this they have to feed properly every day just to replace their reserves for the wintry night ahead. Prolonged frosty periods may result in a high death rate in birds. With some water, wildbird food and protection, gardens can become a haven for birds and other wild animals. Make sure a supply of fresh water is made available every day and, should the temperature be particularly low, use warm water. Throughout the cold winter weather birds require high energy (fatty) foods to maintain their fat reserves in order to survive the frosty nights so a bird table filled with a high nutrient seed mix will be very welcome indeed. In addition a variety of household leftovers such as cooked potato, pastry and bread crumbs, cheese and soft fruit will also be much appreciated as will suspended bird feeders containing sunflower rich blends or nuts without salt.
Bird tables and
bird feeders need to be placed where birds are at ease and able to feed undisturbed and well away from fencing and walls where cats could easily catch them unaware as they feed.

'Tis the Season for Diets!

During the festive period many of us tend to indulge in foods which are higher in calories than the norm and more often than not we spoil our dogs just that bit more. Some dogs, just like humans, put on those extra pounds very easily so it is vitally important that, once the festive period has passed, a low calorie diet and fitness regime is put into action. There are numerous low calorie dog foods and lighter treats on the market that your four legged friend will enjoy just as much and who ultimately will benefit enormously.
Arden Grange Light contains the best ingredients and has properties that can help convert fat into energy leading to a lean body mass. These are naturally hypo-allergenic diets and contain no artificial flavourings or preservatives and exclude preservatives, gluten, wheat, beef and soya products.
A new light kibble from James Wellbeloved has been developed to help reduce weight in obese dogs as it contains high levels of fibre and fewer calories together with Glucosamine for healthy joints and Taurine for the heart. The James Wellbeloved Light kibble is available in either Turkey or Lamb (both with rice) and comes in 1.5kg and 12.5kg bags.
All dogs love a treat and a number of natural treats such as Pet Munchies are naturally low in fat and made from real meat and fish classed as ‘human-grade’. Again, there are no additives or preservatives and these dog treats come in six varieties.
As an extra aid to your dogs weight loss why not tries ‘Slimmin Tonic’ from Pooch & Mutt?  It is designed to be used with a healthy diet and fitness regime and is simply added to your dogs food. Slimmin Tonic helps increase your dog’s metabolic rate and therefore helps burn fat, suppresses the appetite and helps build muscle.
All of the above may be found at the online pet shop supermarket of Home Pet Shop.

Dog Cages

Home Pet Shop offers an excellent range of dog cages and crates for dogs that are the perfect solution for both helping keep your pet safe when you are otherwise occupied or for protecting your house either indoors or outside in the garden. Most dog cages come complete with an easy-to-clean tray or mat that fits neatly in the base and will accommodate a wide variety of soft dog beds.
There is quite a choice when it comes to size with a cage being available to suit the large majority of breeds from the petite to the huge and all have at least one door with most having two or more.
Of course dog cages are only a short term fix and should not be used as a place to leave your pet unattended for hours on end and a bowl of fresh water should always be provided no matter how long they are left for.
Most are finished in a stainless colour although there is also a new range of dog crates with a choice of either black or fashionable pink.

Weatherproof Dog Trouser Suits

Keeping your dog clean, warm and dry when out walking in the winter months is not always easy and, contrary to many beliefs, most ‘house’ dogs are not particularly fond of going out for a walk during rain and snow and having to endure a wet coat. There is a great choice of trouser suits for dogs on the market today with many, together with other Dog Clothing and Accessories, at the online pet superstore of Home Pet Shop.

Showerproof dog trouser suits from Alex Griffiths Cosipet help keep your dog cleaner and dryer during wet weather. These great overalls for dogs are made exclusively in the UK from a shower proof nylon fabric. A zip along the back of the Cosipet Dog Coat makes it easy to put on and take off and elasticated cuffs ensure a snug fit. There are a number of great styles including the Tartan Trouser Suit with Velcro fastening collar.

The Hurtta Pro Outdoor Overall is another excellent quality waterproof dog coat made from breathable Houndtex® material. Complete with reflective print, this dog overall is available in Red or Black and comes in a good range of sizes.

Mr Snugs Outdoor Cat Kennel

Made from durable plastic, and in a variety of contemporary colours, the Mr Snugs Outdoor Cat Kennel is a ‘must have’ for all cat owners.  Cats are usually very independent animals and many spend a lot of time outside so having a nice waterproof house somewhere in the garden is a great idea. Mr Snugs Cat Shelter comes ready assembled, have a recessed door, overhanging roof, have no joints for draughts or water to get through and, being made from one piece of moulded plastic, do not rot or attract parasites. The slightly smaller Mr Snugs Cat Palace is also the perfect home for cats and is made exactly the same as the Mr Snugs Shelter for cats. It also comes in a similar choice of 10 colours and can be bought at the online pet supermarket of Home Pet Shop. Another added benefit of these cat houses is that each has a drain hole for ease of cleaning and they also make a great indoor cat house.

Mr Snugs Dog Kennel

Owning a dog is not always easy as they can be a tie and many dog owners make a lot of sacrifices and compromises to make their pooch happy. Of course it’s not just about making them happy as many of us worry about leaving them alone for any kind of prolonged period and, in truth, they should not be left for longer than 2 or 3 hours at any one time. The more you do compromise your life by either taking your dog with you or by staying at home rather than popping to the shops, then the more your dog will ‘complain’ when you do leave him or her at home.
Assuming your dog is not a persistent barker (especially if you have neighbours nearby) having a kennel for dogs outside will help whilst you are away from home as they’re happy to be able to have the freedom to relax in the garden and you’re happy that they’re not cooped up inside the house.
A range of Mr Snugs plastic dog kennels is available to buy from the online pet shop supermarket of Home Pet Shop.  They come in two sizes (large and small) and are manufactured from rotationally moulded plastic (no joins) which, unlike wooden dog kennels, will not let in water, don’t need painting, do not rot, and, being made of a durable plastic, are very  easy to keep clean therefore preventing  micro-organisms to hide or parasite infestation such as fleas . Each has a long roof overhang and recessed entry to ensure that the interior remains dry and there is a drain hole for draining after cleaning.
The Mr Snugs Dog Kennel come in ten different colours and can be lined with one of a number of different soft dog beds. They are also the perfect dog house for use inside the home as a place where your pet dog can sleep or rest in peace.

Keeping Cats Inside-Part I

The great cat debate: whether or not to keep your cat in the house or allow it the liberty of the wider world is one which has genuine arguments on both sides. If it turns out you do allow your cat to wander the city or countryside, here are a few suggestions for caring cat ownership.
The natural behavioural instinct of felines is to prey upon small sized animals, which, after all, was the reason that cats were domesticated in the first place. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why a lot of owners, in particular in Europe, consider that it is cruel to keep a cat in the house. Nevertheless it is worth bearing in mind that typically a single domesticated cat, and one that we can believe is being fed well at home, will kill up to 40 animals every year. Mostly, theses fatalities are small mammals, such as mice, and wild birds.
Of course, the one method to get rid of this issue is to keep your cat in the house virtually at all times. Nonetheless, this can cause separate issues, such as monotony, an increase in weight and health complications that go with it although there are a number of cat toys to help keep them active. Consequently, keeping a cat indoors is not an entirely satisfactory strategy. So, here are a few tips regarding how to reduce your outdoor cat’s hit count.
1. Don’t Let Your Cat Out at Night time
Normally, the hunting instinct reaches its peak in the course of the hours of night. As a result, it is wise to keep your cat indoors overnight. If you are worried about restraining the cat’s natural inclination, it is wise to keep in mind that the less a cat is permitted to hunt, the less likely it will want to.
Additionally, keeping your cat inside through the night will increase its safety, as cats are usually much more likely to be hit by a car during the hours of darkness. Offering them a comfortable cat bed to sleep on gives them even more reason to stay inside! Furthermore, feral cats mostly hunt at night, so keeping your cat indoors will help prevent the likelihood that he, or she, is caught up either in a disagreement or with a member of the opposite sex!

Wild Bird Seed

Mixed wild bird seed is perhaps the most economic method of bringing in a wide variety of wild birds directly into the garden. Nevertheless, the low cost variety often carries with it a notice of caution. A number of producers and suppliers see this as being an opportunity to generate easy money by cheapening the grade of the seed blend.

For anyone who is alert to what a regular mix of birdseed is supposed to resemble, you won’t have any kind of problems identifying the calibre of the product you obtain. Wild Bird Food is produced with the idea of attracting more than one type of bird to your garden. Even though there are no strict, absolute rules for the ingredients of this mixture of bird seeds, it is necessary to understand that the varieties of seeds in the mix should appeal to birds of all types and sizes. The goal is to get the birds to eat all the seeds with as little leftover as is possible.

The trouble with many cheap quality bird seed mixtures is the fact that they contain inedible product that most wild birds are going to ignore and leave as waste on either your yard, garden, bird table or patio area. Usually, the seed blends are a mixture of seeds in many different sizes to appeal to birds of different sizes and preferences. Sometimes, the objective is to provide all the essential dietary elements to the birds and with a choice of different types of seeds, the birds will get a balanced diet complete with all of their energy requirements.

This is why the quality of the seeds is extremely important and in the event you frequently discover leftovers of your mix of wild bird seed uneaten, the best option may be to change the product in to an all new one of higher quality that contains minimal or no inedible filler product.

A high quality blend of bird seeds often contain high quality wheat, black sunflower seeds, niger seed, striped sunflower seeds, rape seeds, and corn along with millet. A high quality mix should not contain broken or crushed seeds or unappetizing husks of seeds. Make sure that you do a careful examination of the seeds prior to you making your purchase as the accumulation of wasted filler products will only be a nuisance for you to clean up and can result in the formation of dangerous toxins whilst also being unappealing for your garden birds.Home Pet Shop has an excellent choice of quality wild bird seeds and peanuts at their online pet shop supermarket.

Pet Bedding

Dogs and cats spend a good deal of their lives sleeping. With regard to older dogs and cats, sleep becomes the main “activity”, with a lot of elderly family pets doing not much more than consuming food and snoozing as they head towards their later years. One of the easiest ways to improve the quality of a pet’s life is to give them the very best possible pet bed though many owners barely take into account this particular and very important aspect of their pets’ lives.
Most cats tend to find their own comfy area, choosing to curl up at the end of their owners’ duvets, on a sofa or in a warm quiet corner spot on the carpet. Their decision is generally logical and simple, they like warmth, softness and quietness.

It tends to make good sense to provide a safe, soft, warm bed in a relaxing spot for your cat. A wide selection of cat beds and bedding is readily available from Home Pet Shop at their online pet shop supermarket. Choose a spot that’s accessible to your cat but away from the active places in your house, and you’ll discover that it soon turns into a favourite sleeping spot.

Dogs can be
similarly fussy regarding their choice of sleeping quarters. There are lots of people who’ve gone to the trouble of providing comfy and cosy, bedding for their dog, simply to discover it thrown out of the way, with the dog choosing to sleep on bare floorboards or linoleum instead. It’s a case of experimenting to work out precisely what your dog wants, but the very same rules of warmth and softness generally do work.

Dogs
are inclined to be muckier animals compared to cats, and if you’re not mindful, a dog’s bedding can turn into a strong-smelling area of dog hair thus a frequent freshening in the washing machine is a good idea. This is a factor why it’s well worth deciding on a dog’s bedding with some thought. A normal dog cushion finishes up becoming uneven and lumpy after several washes but if you carry out your research properly, you’ll find that superior quality dog bedding is obtainable that’s designed to repel body oil and hair, and to preserve its original properties following weekly washes for some time to come.

Rabbit Hutches and Runs

When you actually first decided to get a rabbit, you might not have considered where it was going to live! So for your bunny's protection you may decide you will require a rabbit hutch or cage. When considering what kind of hutch or cage to buy, you will need to keep a few points in your head, such as the hutch is to be your rabbits retreat, a haven and home. Then there are a couple of plans to hold in mind such as the financial cost and the dimensions of the rabbit hutch and, exactly where is it likely to go and from what it should be made. Home Pet Shop has a great choice of rabbit hutches at their online pet supermarket.
For starters, if your bunny is of the small variety and might not become any bigger than 8 pounds, you should manage with a hutch from a minimum of 24 inches by 36 inches whilst the larger sizes, at the very least, really want a hutch which measures 30 inches by 36 inches. Consequently it figures that your bunny needs a home which is at minimum four times its size.

Second you need your bunny and yourself, space to move around whilst the hutch or cage is being cleaned. Apart from the standard things for instance a food bowl and water drinker, the hutch must have space for your rabbit to move around. To keep your rabbit from becoming bored, supply him/her some toys and nibble snacks.
Thirdly, if your rabbit is confined to the hutch for extended periods of time, you really require lots of room for him/her to move around and a good idea would be to invest in a rabbit run made from wire meshing which attaches to the hutch.

Fourth
point to think about is exactly what type of base does the hutch/cage have. Should it have wire, think about adding a more stable area for the bunny to rest. When putting in some kind of small pet bedding, it is best to choose straw or wood shavings.
Finally avoid housing more than one bunny in the same hutch since, unless the bunnies have been spayed or neutered, you might get more than you bargained for as rabbits are prolific breeders and the bucks (males) are inclined to fight with one another as well as the does (females) for either space to have babies or to breed. The only time which the rabbits ought to be together is in a neutral area and should be watched over.

Bird Cages

The initial thing which you must consider when investing in a cage bird is undoubtedly a home for it to live. Ideally it is best to keep the bird within the cage itself. There are so many bird cages available on the market of various shapes and sizes and you've got to choose the correct cage for according to your need. While purchasing the cage one should consider certain areas of bird cages as the requirements of different birds differ from one species to another.
The particular aspects that you should consider while buying pet bird cages are:
Length: The cage needs to have good length as all birds prefer to live in large cages. It is significant for one to provide spacious and tall cage to birds as they like to fly from one side of the cage to the other.
Cages are made in various kinds of materials but one of the best materials with which you can go with is stainless steel. One can likewise have one which is powder coated steel. One should favour cages that are made from metals rather than those made from plastics as they are easier to clean.
You should likewise consider the spacing of the bars when choosing. The large sized birds prefer cages that are huge in size and that have wide bars. Whereas small size birds can also call for large type cages due to their behavioural characteristics of flying from end to end of the cage. Nevertheless, the bar spacing for small birds should be quite small.
The cage you decide on needs to have wide doors and  uncomplicated sliding trays at the bottom.
Varieties of bird cages: 1. Breeding Cages: This kind of bird cage is actually made for a pair of birds that are attached to one another although is partitioned by way of a thin panel. One should remove the panel during the mating period in order to facilitate the mating process.
2. Dome top Cages: This type of bird cage allows the occupants to fly freely. This is actually the cage which offers most space.
3. Parrot Perches: This sort of bird cages is usually for large type of parrots such as Macaws and African Greys. Parrot perches can be made from different materials like wood, rope or metal.
These are the well-known kinds of bird cage and these and many others are available at the online pet supermarket of Home Pet Shop. A number of other types of cages are the solitary bird cages, the play top bird cages and travel bird cages. You should think about the size of cage before buying it so that your bird can fit in comfortably. It is essential for one to clean the bird cage on a regular basis.

Ferret Food

Ferrets are meat-eating; they are carnivores not vegetarians! They are an obligate carnivore, which means that they must be given a particular diet that is largely meat-based and contains between 32-38 % proteins along with around 15-20 per cent fat.
For
quite a considerable time now experts have been researching and testing with what is the best kind of feeding for ferrets. The Bones and Raw Food Diet appears to be essentially the most satisfactory, if not always sensible, in terms of the health and survival for your ferret. Here is some information that spells out the concerns about ferret eating habits The ideal feeding regime is an uncooked food diet of things like chicken wings, stripped carcasses and necks, turkey necks, rabbit, all kinds of game birds, pigeons, cheap ground beef, cheap lamb, all offal, (lambs heart is an excellent one and cheap). Every ferret possesses its own tastes though. Uncooked bones are good for cleaning their teeth and the calcium in the bone is also good. They are lactose intolerant so cows’ milk is out but goats milk is in and goats’ yoghurt, sometimes with an egg beaten up with some lactose free milk for a treat will be appreciated. Ferrets also like a bit of fresh fruit, melon is good in the summer to assist them to stay cool but again, each ferret has its own fruit preferences. Do be wary of food poisoning and storing as ferrets love to hide food. If concerned about this feed in a special ferret cage that is an easy task to clean and puts a stop to hoarding and hiding. A great time for you to do this is when you're cleaning the main living accommodation out.Zero Salt, pork, chocolate, or nuts. The salt along with chocolate can be fatal to a ferret. The pork is generally not good for them and nuts get stuck in their teeth leading to mouth problems. Alternatively, a ferret biscuit such as Alpha Ferret Feast is a good idea. It is available to buy at the online pet supermarket of Home Pet Shop along with other similar ferret foods. It is OK to feed a mixed diet of raw food and biscuit although raw food is best as it drastically decreases the occurrence of adrenal disease.
Ferrets
need to have a constant supply of clean water particularly in summer because they can become dehydrated really quickly. A very heavy bowl is essential because the little monsters tip it over. A good alternative is a water feed bottle with a large supply end.
